The Serious Sandspike
The spike should be driven into the sand
  approximately 16"; even a heavy
over-wash of water on an incoming tide
will not loosen the spike. With even a
moderate reel drag setting, no fish can
dislodge the spike.
The shock cord and hinge combination,
when the strong breaking surf strikes your
line or the rip tide wants to dislodge your
sinker, keeps constant tension, regardless.
During a heavy strike, the shock cord and
  hinge combination transfers the vast
majority of the stress off the rod, regardless
of the reel drag setting. the shock cord and
hinge combination will actually fight the
hooked fish until you can get to the rod;
constantly keeping tension on the line.
Immediately after a heavy strike, when the
rod backlashes, the hook & loop tape
rod retainer at the top prevents the rod
from falling from the spike. Additionally,
even when the rod is pulled almost
horizontal to the beach, this retainer
will prevent the rod from dislodging.
The first Serious Sandspike that I built

is now eight years old. I have used it on
approx. 100 fishing trips and it still
functions perfectly even though the color
on the shock cord has faded a little.

Rod removal during a strike
Grab the rod at the reel in the same
way you would as if you were casting
and grab the rod retainer hook & loop
tab and pull both back toward you
simultaneously;
takes about a second to remove the rod.

ATTENTION / CAUTION / WARNING
This Sand Spike must be driven into the sand
with a mallet, and it must be removed from
the sand by grabbing the bottom section of
the Spike, only.
Do not loosen the Spike from the sand
by grabbing the top section of the Spike
YOU WILL BEND THE HINGE !!!

Additionally, I've noticed that in using the
Serious Sand Spike a hundred times the
glue/adhesive on the hook & loop tape
does stay stuck to the aluminum. But, when
I've been lazy and let a spike stay
outdoors and get rained on a half a dozen
times, the adhesive / tape begins to come
loose a little in places.
The tape's adhesive is advertised as
water proof,
but it's not absolutely water proof.
